De lichamen van jonge verslaafde meiden in de Down Town East Side van Vancouver, die veelal een pleegzorg achtergrond hebben, kunnen ons iets vertellen over de heersende machtsrelaties binnen en buiten hun gemeenschap. De aanleiding en gevolgen van hun weg naar “down town” laten zien dat de concepten home en belonging (Hannerz 2002) er voor hen toe doen. In hun zoektocht naar belonging raken deze meiden verstrikt in (oude) trauma(s) en drugs en zetten zij hun seksuele lichaam in om hun verslaving te kunnen voeden. Het lichaam neemt binnen de antropologie een belangrijke plek in. Het lichaam is een sociaal culturele constructie en is daarom van belang te betrekken bij de bestudering van processen rondom gender, macht en multiculturalisme. Schijnbare tegenstellingen zoals kind vs. volwassene zoals gehanteerd in het internationale hulpdebat over kinderen en jongeren in de seksindustrie (O’Connell Davidson 2005, Oude Breuil 2008), zijn ontoereikend om deze complexe vorm van jeugdprostitutie te begrijpen. Aan de hand van het concept social navigation (Vigh 2003) wordt een completer perspectief op de meiden, hun lichaam en hun handelingsruimte geschetst.
