Los sistemas de recomendación están presentes en muchos aspectos de nuestro día a día y su objetivo es hacernos llegar la información de mayor interés para nosotros. Estos sistemas son una eficaz herramienta para minimizar la saturación de información a la que estamos permanentemente expuestos, y así evitar muchos de los problemas que conlleva este exceso de información: desde la disminución de la productividad a problemas de salud, como adicción y ansiedad, entre otros. El valor que estos sistemas aportan a nuestra vida es evidente, y esto se puede ver reflejado en el hecho de que, muchas de las empresas de diversos sectores que hoy forman parte de las más importantes del mundo, fueron pioneras en incorporar algún tipo de sistema de recomendación. No obstante, la aplicación de estos sistemas aún no se ha extendido a todos los sectores, o al menos no se está aprovechando todo el rendimiento que pueden ofrecer. Solo en 2019, se estrenaron 873 películas en Estados Unidos y Canadá y, entre 2014 y 2019, se estrenaron más de 700 películas cada año. De todas estas, la gran mayoría del público tan solo llega a oír hablar de un número muy reducido: normalmente, de las que más premios ganan, o de aquellas que más invierten en publicidad. Probablemente, si la mayoría de la audiencia estuviese al día de los nuevos estrenos que realmente le interesan, disfrutaría más y los consumiría con mayor frecuencia. Esto se traduciría en un incremento de ingresos y la distribución de estos entre un mayor número de productoras. Por otro lado, a pesar de los esfuerzos de muchas compañías (principalmente de streaming) por incorporar algoritmos de recomendación avanzados, o mejorar el rendimiento de los mismos, hoy en día, siguen siendo muchos los que reconocen perder mucho tiempo debatiendo por qué película o serie de TV ver cuando se sientan delante de la pantalla o van al cine. Ante este problema, se plantea como solución el desarrollo de una comunidad virtual, en la que los usuarios podrán recibir información relevante y personalizada sobre contenido películas, series y otros tipos de contenido audiovisual, llamada Filmeca. Un elemento muy destacado de esta comunidad son las funcionalidades sociales que se pretenden incorporar. Gracias a estas, el usuario podrá estar al día sobre la actividad de sus amigos, lo cual facilitará la toma de decisiones. El objetivo de este proyecto es desarrollar un sistema de recomendación híbrido para Filmeca. Este sistema estará presente en diferentes apartados de la aplicación y se basará en dos fuentes de información principales: la similitud entre los títulos y las valoraciones de cada usuario. A partir de esta información, el sistema realizará recomendaciones mediante dos tipos de enfoques: basado en contenido y basado en filtrado colaborativo.

\nRecommender systems are are present in many aspects of our daily life, and their goal is to provide us with the most relevant information. These systems are an effective tool to minimize the saturation of information we are constantly exposed to, thus avoiding many of the problems this excess of information implies: from a productivity slowdown to health problems, such us addiction and anxiety, among others. The value these systems provide to our life are clear, and an evidence of it is the fact that, many of the world leading companies from various industries, were the pioneers in integrating some kind of recommender system. Nevertheless, theses systems have not yet been implemented in every sector or, in many cases, their performance leaves much to be desired. In 2019, 873 films were released in USA and Canada, and between 2014 and 2019, more than 700 were released each year. Despite this, the average spectator only gets to know a reduced number of these releases, usually, the ones which invest the most on marketing or get most of the awards. If the audience got to know the releases they are really are interested on, it is likely that they would enjoy them more often. That would translate into a higher and more distributed income between all the production companies. On the other hand, besides the efforts made by many — mainly streaming— companies to integrate more advanced recommendation algorithms and to improve their performance, nowadays, many people remain complaining about spending too much time when deciding what to watch. In response to this problem, the proposed solution consists on a virtual community, where users will receive updated information concerning films, TV series and other types. The name of this community is Filmeca, it will include as well some social functionalities. Thanks to these, users will be able to keep up with what their friends are watching, what will facilitate decision making. The goal of this project is to develop a hybrid recommender system for Filmeca. The system will be available in different sections on the website and it will be based on two main sources of information: the level of similarity between the items and users’ ratings. From this, the system will carry out the predictions by two different kinds of approaches, respectively: content-based and collaborative filter based recommendations.
