Abstract
Officials at southern Utah's Zion National Park say they're being overrun by visitors, even during the usual winter lull. Winter is usually a quiet time at Zion National Park in Utah......but this holiday season, rangers have had to block tour buses and other cars to control the crowds.Traffic often backs up into the neighboring town of Springdale.Some residents are calling on the state to tone down its "Mighty Five" tourism campaign focused on the state's national parks.A Springdale councilwoman says the crowds don't necessarily translate into more traffic at town businesses.Park rangers say they're being stretched too thin...in the summer, a mandatory shuttle brings visitors to the park.In the winter, the service gets cut back, which means more people travel by car.Cars are sometimes rushed through the toll gate without the usual 30-dollars-per-vehicle charge.The offseason demand will likely cause a spike in attendance...with visitation expected to top 4 million for 2016, a record.For the AP...
