Abstract
Gerrit Jan tenZythoff (ten Zythoff, ten Zijthoff) was born in Gramsbergen, the Netherlands, on February 17, 1922, to H. J. and J. A. ten Zijthoff. He graduated from the GymDoetinchem in 1941. He earned a B.A. degree from the University of Utrecht in 1942; B.D. degree from the University of Utrecht in 1950; Master of Sacred Theology (S.T.M.) degree from Union College in British Columbia, Canada, in 1957; M.A. degree from the University of Chicago in 1961; and a Ph.D. degree from the University of Chicago in 1967. His studies were interrupted when he was incarcerated by the Nazis for harboring Jews during World War Two. He escaped in 1943 and worked with the Dutch underground for the remainder of the war. He was licensed by the P.S. Gronigen in 1951 and ordained by the Classis Montgomery in 1952. He served as a chaplain in Dutch government camps from 1945-1946, and as the secretary of Social Studies at Theological Fac., the Netherlands, from 1946-1948. He served as a pastor for the United Church of Canada in Plainfield, Ontario, Canada, 1951-1952; Brockville, Ontario, Canada, 1952-1954; and Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, 1954-1959. He served as a lecturer for Western Theological Seminary, 1961-1962; as a professor for Ohio State University, 1966-1969; and Southwest Missouri State University, 1969-1993, where he founded the first religious studies program in a state university in the state of Missouri. He served as the head of this department from 1969-1981. He passed away in 2001. The collection contains biographical information and his 1958 thesis “A Contribution Towards Understanding the Ecclesiastical Background of Dutch Calvinists in North America,” submitted in partial fulfillment of requirements for the Master of Sacred Theology (S.T.M.) degree from Union College in British Columbia, Canada.
