Kadim bir şehir olan Antakya, tarih boyunca birçok devletin idaresi altında kalmış, 1516 yılında ise Osmanlı hakimiyetine girmiştir. Bazı tarihlerde sancak yapılsa da 16. yüzyıl boyunca genellikle Halep Sancağı’nın bir kazası olarak Osmanlı idari teşkilatı içindeki yerini almıştır. Antakya Kazası’nın Antakya, Süveyde, Kuseyr, Altunözü, Cebel-i Akra‘ ve Şuğur olmak üzere 6 nahiyesi vardı. Evkaf kayıtlarından anlaşıldığına göre, 16. yüzyılın ortalarında Antakya Şehri’nde vakıfları olan toplam beş cami, 23 mescit, bir makam, bir muallimhane, bir medrese, bir buk‘a ve bir zaviye yer almaktaydı. Ayrıca Antakya’nın kasaba ve köylerinde de bir cami, bir mektep, üç zaviye ve 13 mescit bulunuyordu. Bu çalışmada, Tapu ve Kadastro Genel Müdürlüğü Arşivi’nde muhafaza edilen 1550 tarihli Halep Evkaf Defteri kaynak olarak kullanılmak suretiyle, Antakya Şehri ve köylerinde yer alan hayrat vakıfların isimleri, bulundukları yerler ve personelleri ile yıllık gelir ve giderleri üzerinde durulmuştur.
