Objetivo: Adaptar e validar o Sinclair Compassion Questionnaire (SCQ), versão longa e curta, para português europeu na pessoa com necessidades paliativas foram os principais objetivos deste estudo metodológico. Método: Participaram neste estudo 150 pessoas com necessidades paliativas, em regime de internamento ou acompanhados em consulta pela equipa intra-hospitalar de suporte de cuidados paliativos de um Centro Hospitalar da região Centro de Portugal. A fim de garantir que os participantes não apresentavam alterações da capacidade cognitiva foi aplicado o Short Portable Mental Status Questionnaire. Os dados foram colhidos através de uma entrevista estruturada, constituída por dados sociodemográficos e clínicos, o Sinclair Compassion Questionnare, o Edmonton Symptom Assessment System, a Palliative Performance Scale. Resultados: Os participantes apresentaram uma média de 70,93± 12.51 anos, sendo a maioria do sexo masculino, casados, a viver com o cuidador familiar e estão aposentados. A maioria salienta a importância da espiritualidade. Após realizada a adaptação linguística, semântica e de conteúdo determinaram-se as caraterísticas psicométricas. A determinação da consistência, confirmou os bons resultados não só para a Versão longa (α=0,988), como para a versão curta (α=0, 969). A análise fatorial exploratória (versão longa) e exploratória e confirmatória (curta) determinou a existência de apenas um fator à semelhança do que aconteceu na versão original. Não se verificaram diferenças com significado estatístico, entre o nível de compaixão a idade, sexo e intensidade dos sintomas referidos pelos participantes. Conclusões Este estudo disponibilizou um instrumento para avaliar a compaixão, do ponto de vista do utente, sendo importante a sua aplicação na prática clínica, formação e investigação.
