en la parte Oriente, se halla el devoto y retirado convento de Santa María de Obarenes, entre la ciudad de Frías y las villas de Pancorbo y Santa Gadea... Tiene su sitio la casa y el lugar en un valle pequeño rodeado de cuestas bien ásperas aunque de pastos abundantes mucho para los ganados mayores y menores.El puesto es frío, tiene abundancia grande de leña, con que se defiende y repara de sus rigores.Las nieblas con que se ve rodeado desde los llanos de Santa Gadea le representan melancólico, mas en el verano es alegre y paga con su amenidad y frescura lo que hace padecer en el invierno, porque goza de regaladas, frías y copiosas fuentes, que juntándose con las de Hontoria, tan celebradas, se hacen río.Tiene bastante género de frutas y legumbres para sustento y alivio de los religiosos.Y al fin la primavera es alegre, el estío templado en los ardores y el otoño apacible y saludable" (1).En sus comienzos el monasterio se llamó de los Santos Lorenzo, Mamés, Justo y Pastor y Caprasio, pero desde que lo restaurara Doña Rica, esposa de Alfonso VII en 1151 se llamó siempre con el nombre de Imperial monasterio de Ntra.Sra. de Obarenes.
