L'Institut de recherche en construction (IRC) du Conseil national de recherches du Canada (CNRC), avec l'aide de ses partenaires, a mis sur pied le projet Les Aires ouvertes rentables (AOR). L'objectif du projet AOR était d'examiner les effets de différents choix de conception de bureaux à aire ouverte sur l'environnement intérieur, ainsi que l'effet de cet environnement sur la satisfaction des occupants. Nous avons utilisé la modélisation par ordinateur, des recherches bibliographiques, des études en laboratoire qui ont porté sur la ventilation et l'acoustique. Nous avons aussi réalisé une vaste étude sur le terrain, pour laquelle nous avons visité près de 800 postes de travail où nous avons mesuré des paramètres tels que: la température, la vélocité de l'air, l'humidité, le niveau de bruit, l'éclairage et la qualité de l'air. Nous avons aussi recueilli en même temps, de la part des occupants des postes de travail, des in-formations sur leur degré de satisfaction relatif aux paramètres de l'environnement intérieur.
