Abstract
« Allaiter sans être vue », c’est ce que l’on attend des femmes. On exige des mères qu’elles allaitent exclusivement pendant les six premiers mois postpartum pour le bien-être de leur enfant, mais on exige qu’elles le fassent le plus possible à l’abri des regards. Cette discrétion serait imposée aux femmes, notamment, en raison de la sexualisation de leurs seins comme objet du désir masculin dans les sociétés occidentales. Comment les mères parviennent-elles à répondre à ces demandes qui peuvent être perçues comme étant contradictoires? Comment les femmes parviennent-elles à négocier la pratique de l’allaitement en public? De quelles manières certaines femmes allaitantes se réapproprient-elles l’espace public? C’est ce que nous explorerons dans ce texte qui prendra la forme d’un essai critique abordant les normes sociales entourant l’allaitement en public au Québec comme un enjeu de visibilité des femmes dans l’espace public.
