Abstract
This paper examines the international solidarity campaigns conducted between 1979 and 1984 by the Canadian Catholic Organization for Development and Peace (Desarrollo y Paz) and the Catholic Women’s League of Canada (LMC) in collaboration with the Argentine group Abuelas de Plaza de Mayo. It highlights how these campaigns emerged in response to the plight of the "disappeared children" during Argentina’s military dictatorship. The study analyzes a diverse corpus of documents, including institutional press releases, interviews, and letters sent by Canadian citizens and Argentine activists, to explore the representations of gender, motherhood, and justice presents in these exchanges. It investigates how these representations shaped the international reception of Abuelas' demands and how they articulated their claims within a global human rights discourse. Furthermore, it reflects on the emotional impact of these campaigns on both political advocacy and public awareness regarding human rights violations in Argentina.
