L'articolo prende in esame il tema del coraggio nell'ambito delle saghe e delle iscrizioni runiche dedicate ai vichinghi. Gli 'uomini del Nord', incuranti di rischi e pericoli, tra l'VIII e l'XI secolo si avventurarono come esploratori e mercenari, mercanti e predoni dalla Scandinavia al Mediterraneo, dal Nord Atlantico al Medio Oriente. Il loro apporto fu determinante per una conoscenza geografica della Scandinavia, la scoperta di nuove terre (dall'Islanda alla Groenlandia, al leggendario Vinland sulle coste del Labrador), e un nuovo assetto religioso e politico nel Nordeuropa.
