Abstract
Im Kreis Höxter ist die Kreuzkröte anscheinend nie häufig gewesen. Die wenigen Nachweise aus den letzten 50 Jahren stammen aus der Umgebung von Bad Driburg und aus der südöstlichen Egge zwischen Bonenburg und Scherfede (BEINLICH et al. 2000). Erstaunlicherweise fehlen Nachweise aus dem Wesertal völlig, obwohl sich gerade dort die ursprünglichen Lebensräume der Kreuzkröte befunden haben dürften. Heute zählt die kleine Kröte zu den seltensten Amphibien im Kreis Höxter. Um einen Überblick über die aktuelle Situation der Kreuzkröte im Kreis zu bekommen, wurden durch den Naturkundlichen Verein Egge-Weser 2010 alle ehemaligen Vorkommen sowie die aktuell geeignet erscheinenden Lebensräume auf Vorkommen dieser seltenen Amphibienart hin überprüft. Bevor im Folgenden die Ergebnisse der Kartierungen und darauf aufbauende Schlussfolgerungen vorgestellt werden, soll zunächst ein Überblick über wichtige Aspekte der Biologie der Art, ihre bevorzugten Lebensräume, ihre Verbreitung und bundesweite Gefährdung gegeben werden.
