Abstract
Habiendo sido adjunta en la alta direeción de una gran institución universitaria de Quebec durante cerca de quince años, me encontré en primera fila para observar unos dirigentes en y reflexionar sobre la función general de administración, en particular sobre la dirección. Hecho importante a señalar, la institución universitaria no es una organización como las otras. Es una reproducción a escala reducida de la ciudad. Contrariamente a los establecimientos especializados en un sector de actividades, la universidad asume las funciones mas diversas, lo que constituye un verdadero universo en estado concentrado, actividades ligadas a la misión(formación de los estudiantes y avance en el conocimiento); servicios de soporte (biblioteca, informática, contabilidad, archivos); servicios de utilidad pública(mensajería, seguridad) y social (higiene y salud, empleo, guardería, deportes, pastoral, actividades culturales y recreativas); servicios comerciales (librería, hotelería y restaurante); administrativos (personal, banca) y técnicos (mantenimiento, compras). La expresión "Ciudad universitaria" refleja bien la riqueza de esta realidad.
