This paper describes my experiences in teaching report writing to students in a Japanese university.Some background is given as to the importance of report writing and my own experiences with it, first in the context of technical and business English writing courses for native speakers in Canada, and then adapted to a Japanese university setting with Japanese students.These reports are based on primary research in the form of interviews with older retired people.The components of a formal report lend themselves to a number of shorter writing assignments which can be combined to create the completed formal report.The process is described within the context of a 15-week, 45-hour, 3 rd year reading and writing course.A project timeline is provided, and the function of each report component is discussed, and examples are given.Considerations for interviewing older people are considered and recommendations are offered.Finally, the merits of this type of project are discussed.
