Abstract
RÉSUMÉ: Ce mémoire porte sur les trois premiers romans de l'autrice québécoise Dominique Fortier, Du bon usage des étoiles (2008), Les larmes de saint Laurent (2010) et La porte du ciel (2011). En prenant appui sur les travaux de René Audet et Nicolas Xanthos sur les transformations du personnage romanesque contemporain (Le roman contemporain au détriment du personnage, 2014 ; Ce que le personnage contemporain dit à la critique, 2019), il étudie la fragilisation du statut d'agent de l'histoire chez les personnages de Fortier. L'hypothèse proposée est celle d'une mise à l'avant-plan des éléments naturels dans chacun des romans étudiés, qui reléguerait les personnages à l'arrière-plan. Le mémoire convoque ainsi l'approche écocritique, développée dans les dernières décennies principalement dans le monde anglo-saxon (Buell, Garrard, Glotfelty), qui étudie dans les oeuvres la relation entre les êtres humains et l'écologie. Conjuguée aux travaux sur le personnage contemporain, l'approche écocritique permet d'étudier le transfert d'agentivité des personnages aux éléments naturels dans les trois premiers romans de Fortier, qui procéderaient respectivement à un effacement, une mise en suspens puis un recommencement du personnage romanesque. -- ABSTRACT: The present thesis examines the Quebecois author Dominique Fortier's first three novels, Du bon usage des étoiles (2008), Les larmes de saint Laurent (2010) and La porte du ciel (2011). Building on René Audet and Nicolas Xanthos's work on the transformations of the contemporary novel's character (Le roman contemporain au détriment du personnage, 2014; Ce que le personnage contemporain dit à la critique, 2019), it studies the weakening of the status of historical agent in Fortier's characters. The proposed hypothesis is that the natural elements in each of the novels studied are brought to the forefront, thus relegating the characters to the background. The thesis therefore calls upon the ecocriticism approach, mainly developed in the last decades in the Anglo-Saxon world (Buell, Garrard, Glotfelty), which studies the relations between humans and ecology within novels. Paired with the research on the contemporary character, the ecocriticism allows an analysis of the character's transfer of agency to the natural elements in Fortier's first three novels, which would correspondingly proceed to an erasure, a postponement and a recommencement of the novel's character.
