La présente étude a été menée afin de classifier et cartographier la végétation du mont Gosford, un massif compris dans la portion sud-est des montagnes frontalières, et d'évaluer son potentiel en vue de l'établissement d'une réserve écologique.En raison du grand nombre d'habitats différents, la flore du secteur est riche en espèces. Elle se compose de 207 plantes vasculaires dont une est rare au Québec (Dryopteris goldiana) et 10 sont à distribution appalachienne. Les bryophytes et les lichens comptent 54 et 21 taxons respectivement.L'étude phytosociologique, selon la méthode de Braun-Blanquet (1932), a permis de reconnaître 14 associations, 6 sous-associations et 2 faciès, à partir de 101 relevés de terrain. Parmi ces unités, notons la rareté des sapinières à épinette rouge typique et à oxalide des montagnes, au niveau provincial.L'analyse des 101 profils de sols échantillonnés a permis de les classer en 6 groupes. Plus de la moitié des profils sont classés dans l'ordre podzolique.A la lumière de ces indications, une analyse discriminante, appliquée sur différents facteurs édaphiques a permis d'établir la relation entre les groupements reconnus et leur milieu et de mieux comprendre ainsi leur distribution.Finalement, considérant la diversité écologique et le potentiel pour la conservation des groupements végétaux, l'étude recommande que le secteur étudié soit proposé pour la création d'une réserve écologique.
