This thesis is an investigation of the insect fauna of Ontario tallgrass prairie habitat, its historical relationship to the western prairies, and the effects of prescribed burning on insects in Ojibway Prairie Provincial Nature Reserve. The insect fauna of Ontario tallgrass prairie, which is a habitat with many endemic insect species, was poorly known prior to this study. It is reviewed here in order to evaluate the prairie peninsula hypothesis. Over 100 new provincial and Canadian records and 3 new species were found. The effect of prescribed burning on the insect composition of Ojibway Prairie Provincial Nature Reserve was examined over several months. No evidence was found to suggest that burning has any significant effect. New data on Ontario's tallgrass prairie insect communities will allow conservation efforts to be focused on areas with high levels of endemism or rare species.
