A feasibility study of a soybean peroxidase extraction facility using real options

Abstract
This thesis is an investigation of the financial feasibility of extracting soybean peroxidase (SBP) from soybean hulls. SBP is an enzyme that can be used as a substitute for hydrogen peroxide and horseradish peroxidase in a number of industrial and medical applications such as in pulp and paper bleaching, waste water treatment, soil remediation, on-site waste destruction, bread dough conditioning and as a substitute for horseradish peroxidase in medical diagnostics. While the extraction process is technically feasible, a financial assessment is calculated for a plant beside a soybean crushing facility in Hamilton, Ontario. The net present value for the $66 million dollar investment is $38 million. While the extraction plant is financially feasible, the results are sensitive to two key parameters. One is the cost of the spray dryer to extract the SBP, which represents over 90% of the investment, and the other is price of SBP, for which the break-even level is less than 20% of the assumed base price. Given the uncertainty associated with bioproducts such as SBP, the analysis is extended to incorporate uncertainty and managerial flexibility through a real options approach.
