Abstract
La gaulthérie couchée ou Gaultheria procumbens L., sous-arbrisseau rampant de la famille des Ericacées, était déjà bien connue des Inuits au Canada, qui l'utilisaient sous forme d'infusion, comme succédané au fameux thé de Chine ou pour traiter leurs migraines. Le genre Gaultheria renferme des espèces de plantes ornementales ; l'espèce procumbens présente quant à elle un intérêt en thérapeutique sous forme d'huile essentielle, communément appelée essence de wintergreen . L'huile essentielle, obtenue par distillation par entrainement à la vapeur d'eau des feuilles, est riche en salicylate de méthyle (98%), et constitue une source naturelle de dérivé salicylé. Cet ester confère les principales propriétés à l'huile essentielle, et notamment celle d'être anti-inflammatoire. Le retour à la nature et aux médecines douces devrait accroitre l'utilisation de cette huile essentielle, bien connue à l'heure actuelle des sportifs.
