Abstract

fetched live from OpenAlex

The Saskatchewan Roughriders, arguably Canada’s most beloved football team, operate in the second smallest market for a professional sports franchise in North America. The team has recently entered into a phase where they are in the top three most popular sports brand in Canada and the most popular in the Canadian Football League, warranting an examination of the historical trajectory of the fandom. Notably, the team draws provincial wide support that has aided the club when it was on the brink of financial ruin numerous times. Despite one of the worst playoff records in league history, the Roughriders perseverance and endurance has attracted a remarkably devout following. By tracing the roots of the club and its fans, a detailed account of the team’s importance to the community and province is illuminated. The team operates as a microcosm of both the city of Regina and the province of Saskatchewan, and its struggles often parallel the struggles that the province encounters. As a result the Roughriders franchise both reflects and embodies community values of Regina and the broader province.
