Abstract
--- Lumbosacral instability is the result of a biomechanical upset of the lumbosacral joint, which produces compensatory and proliferative changes in the bony and ligamentous structures that surround it, provoking the tightening of the lumbosacral canal and the compression of the cauda equine and/or its nervous roots. The aim of this study was to determine the frequency of presentation of this disease in dogs of the breed Labrador retriever greater of 6 months of age, as well as to determine its association with the variables sex, age, weight, radiological signs and clinical sign of lumbosacral pain. The study was realized by means of radiographic evaluation. Sixty dogs selected at random and distributed according to sex (30 in each one), age (3 age groups) and weight (3 categories) were evaluated. A frequency of 75.0% (45/60) was determined, being the first information obtained of the disease in our country, which agrees with the obtained ones in international studies. The females were most affected by 86.7% (26/30) and the male:female ratio found was of 1:1.4, which differs from the already obtained records, where the males were the most affected and the above mentioned proportion was of 1.3:1 to 5:1. A statistical significant association with the age was not obtained, but even like that were found 3 animals (of a total of 5, 60 %), 2-year-old minors of age, positive to the disease, of which 66.7 % (2/3) was minors of the year of age (1 male and 1 female). The obese animals (overweight >15 % on the limit of the standard) showed the major percentage of presentation with 87.5 % (21/24). The most frequent radiological sign was the ventral subluxation of the sacrum relative to L7 with a percentage of 75.0 % (45/60). To evaluate the clinical sign of lumbosacral pain this one showed a frequency of 80.0 % (45/60) by means of the transrectal palpation. The radiological evaluation of the disease guards a very high degree of concordance with the evaluation of the lumbosacral pain. It is recommends the radiological evaluation of individuals of the breed Labrador retriever from 6 months of age (with or without clinical signs) to be able to come to an early diagnosis of the disease. \n \nKeywords: Lumbosacral instability, dog, Labrador retriever, radiological evaluation, sex, age, weight, radiological sign, clinical sign.
