Abstract
Hippolyte Bellangé a connu une longue carrière qui s’est étendue de la Restauration au Second Empire. Dès ses débuts au Salon de 1822, il s’est rapidement imposé comme l’un des principaux chantres de la légende napoléonienne, aux côtés d’illustres confrères tels que Nicolas-Toussaint Charlet et Auguste Raffet. Ayant grandi au cœur de l’apogée et de l’effervescence du Premier Empire, Bellangé appartient à une génération d’artistes qui, à la suite de la défaite de Waterloo, ont transposé dans leurs œuvres toute une palette de mélancolie et de nostalgie envers cette rutilance passée, tout autant entraperçue que fantasmée. À travers son art, Hippolyte Bellangé a su façonner une représentation emblématique de Napoléon susceptible de capturer l’imagination du public et de laisser une empreinte durable dans la mémoire collective. Son intuition, en tant que peintre et lithographe, lui a permis d’appréhender la dimension symbolique dont l’image de Napoléon allait se parer au fil des siècles.
