Abstract
During his visit to the 1967 Montreal World’s Fair on July 3rd, an ordinaryMontreal native visitor, Meredith Dixon photographed Queen Elizabeth II being greetedoutside the Indians of Canada pavilion, thereby capturing a unique intersection ofcolonial histories (Figure 1). Canada’s bond to the British Crown on its centennialintersects with the complex history of relations between the Canadian government andthe Indigenous people, while reminding us of the still-existent importance of the Crownin 1960s Aboriginal politics of Canada. Building a separate pavilion for the First Nationspeople was not planned at the outset, and was thus an unexpected outcome of Expo 672.The initial plans for Expo 67 were for the stories of Aboriginal groups to be included inthe narrative of a single Canada pavilion, as in previous fairs3.[...]
