Si l'on assiste depuis les 20 dernières années à une accélération de la mondialisation du capitalisme, d'une part, l'internationalisation de la solidarité s'est également développée, d'autre part. C'est ce dont témoigne la campagne de Développement et Paix visant les compagnies Nike et Levis et qui s'est étalée de 1996 à 1998. Bien que ces entreprises multinationales aient un code de conduite touchant la sous-traitance avec des entreprises situées très souvent dans des zones franches, Développement et Paix demandait à ces deux compagnies d'instaurer des mécanismes de vérification indépendants de leur code de conduite, afin de faire respecter les droits des travailleuses et travailleurs embauchés par leurs sous-traitants dans les pays en voie de développement. Cette lutte a pu se développer notamment grâce à la présence du réseau canadien de Développement et Paix dans les diocèses et dans les établissements scolaires. Si la lutte n'a pas atteint ses objectifs, il demeure que des dizaines de milliers de personnes ont pu prendre conscience du problème en signant une pétition. Pour atteindre pleinement ses objectifs, la lutte aurait dû mobiliser les travailleuses et travailleurs des zones franches, un défi considérable compte tenu des contraintes à la mobilisation que rencontrent ces personnes.
