Publikacja niniejsza, wpisująca się w nurt historii kobiecej i społecznej stanowi pierwsze w Polsce studium transformacji roli kobiet w Kanadzie na przełomie XIX i XX wieku. Przedstawia ona położenie i problemy, z jakimi kobiety z różnych klas społecznych borykały się w Kanadzie w XIX i na początku XX wieku. Przykład kanadyjski jest szczególnie ciekawy ze względu na krzyżujące się w tym kraju wpływy amerykańskie i brytyjskie, a w prowincji Quebec także francuskie. Tekst rozpoczyna się od krótkiego opisu pozycji kobiet w Brytyjskiej Ameryce Północnej przed początkiem wieku XIX, po czym autorka przystępuje do analizy wiktoriańskich norm obyczajowych i wzorców zachowań oraz pozycji prawnej kobiet w XIX wieku. Dalsze rozdziały przedstawiają działalność reformatorską i społeczną organizacji kobiecych, starania kobiet o zapewnienie równego dostępu do edukacji, aktywność zawodową kobiet w Kanadzie na przełomie wieków oraz historię walki o prawa wyborcze kobiet w poszczególnych prowincjach, a także na szczeblu ogólnonarodowym. Poszczególne rozdziały zawierają także odrębne, dodatkowe części zatytułowane „W zbliżeniu” przedstawiające portrety wybranych postaci kobiecych mające stanowić ilustrację wybranych procesów historyczno-kulturowych.
