Abstract
This vessel was originally named the "Benson Ford." She was built at the River Rouge, Michigan plant of the Great Lakes Engineering Works. She was of 8,626 gross tons. She was owned by the Ford Motor Company from 1924, when she was built, until 1982, In 1974, she ran aground off the entrance to the Toledo, Ohio harbor. With the help of four tugs, she was re-floated after off-loading 3,000 tons of coal. For the next four years, she was owned by the Frank J. Sullivan, Jr. of Cleveland, Ohio. It was then that her name was changed to the "John Dykstra." She was bought by Marine Salvage of Port Colborne, Ontario in 1983. When the vessel was scrapped in 1986, her pilot house became the "Ship House" on South Bass Island.
