Abstract
The “J.S. Ashley” was built in 1909 by the American Ship Building Company. She was first owned by the Kinney Steamship Co. of Cleveland, Ohio from 1909 until 1936, when ownership transferred to the Pioneer Steamship Co. (Hutchingson & Co., Mgrs.) also from Cleveland. While under Pioneer Steamship Company’s ownership, she was converted to a self-loader (1936). They owned her until 1961, when ownership transferred to the American Steamship Co. (Boland & Cornelius, Mgrs.) of Buffalo, New York. In 1962, she was renamed “Fred A. Manske.” The American Steamship Co. maintained ownership until 1976. From 1976 until 1980, she was owned by Dale Transports, Ltd. (Westside Shipping, Ltd., Mgrs.) of Missisauga, Ontario, Canada. Under their ownership, she was renamed “Brookdale” (Canada 370901). In July 1980, she lost her self-unloading boom while docked in Windsor, Ontario. Three months later she arrived in Port Maitland, Ontario, and was scrapped.
