This study examined the characteristics of individuals enumerated as 'unsound of mind' in the 1871 and 1891 Censuses of Canada to identify and locate 'insanity' in nineteenth century Canada. A variety of residential options were identified, including remaining at home or lodging within the community, living in insane asylums and residing in other institutions such as jails, hospitals and homes operated by charities. The foreign-born, particularly the Irish, individuals aged 40-60 and Roman Catholics were identified as being overrepresented amongst the insane asylum populations. An examination of the origins and development of the country's insane asylums emphasized that despite some differences, there were increasing commonalities in the structure of asylums in each province, warranting the development of a national perspective.
