Abstract
Le baptême des petits enfants a été pratiqué de manière unanime et généralisée pendant des siècles, mais il fait aujourd'hui l'objet de sérieuses remises en question, en lien avec les autres composantes de l'initiation chrétienne. Ce mémoire cherche à faire la lumière sur la problématique théologique soulevée par une telle remise en question. On y décrit d'abord l'initiation chrétienne dans son ensemble, d'un point de vue diachronique (premier chapitre) et synchronique (deuxième chapitre). Puis, trois dimensions fondamentales du baptême sont explorées: geste de croyant, geste d'Église et célébration (chapitres trois à cinq). La remise en question du baptême des petits enfants est ensuite analysée dans le détail pour l'ensemble de l'Église (chapitre six) et pour le Québec (Chapitre sept). Enfin, la conclusion formule une proposition de cadre théorique d'un questionnement renouvelé.
