Adapter la vie d'un personnage historique à la scène impose des conditions de création particulières à l'auteur dramatique. Cela est d'autant plus vrai si l'œuvre s'adresse à un jeune public. La pièce Le roi de la glace, mettant en scène Frédéric Tudor, un marchand de glace américain ayant réellement vécu au cours du 18e siècle, est le produit de cette double contrainte du personnage historique et du jeune public. La réflexion qui suit la pièce porte sur les pratiques de deux auteurs québécois qui ont écrit pour les enfants une pièce dont le personnage principal a réellement existé : Suzanne Lebeau pour sa pièce Petit Pierre et Jean-Rock Gaudreault pour sa pièce Pour ceux qui croient que la Terre est ronde.
