Abstract
On Febrnary 16, 2005, the National Hockey League became the first professional league to lose an entire season as a result of a labor dispute.The entire 2004-2005 season was lost when the league locked out the players when an agreement could not be reached on a new collective bargaining agreement.This thesis examines that event and how it was framed in the New York Times and the Globe and Mail in Toronto, looking at what the implications are in regard to coverage of sports and coverage of labor.A new categmy of framing is also discovered, outside consequences, which is particularly relevant when the story being framed is a long-lasting event.
