Abstract
La danse autour du fou est un survol de l’histoire organisationnelle de la prise en charge de la folie au Québec. Pourquoi le mot \nfou? Parce que les univers conceptuels qui ont succédé à celui du mot folie, employé au début de la colonie, ont effectué des catégorisations plus ou moins compatibles en matière de comportement déviant stigmatisé par la société : aliénation, maladie mentale, syndrome, structure clinique, troubles psychiques, problèmes de santé mentale, problèmes de détresse psychosociale, problèmes de performance de rôles sociaux, etc. À chaque catégorisation correspond une solution de l’époque : la prison ou l’exorcisme, les loges et l’asile, l’hôpital psychiatrique, les centres communautaires de santé mentale, les CLSC, les nouvelles structures de la réforme Barrette. \nChaque solution oscille entre, d’une part, l’écoute et la compassion et, d’autre part, la mise à l’écart et l’oubli. Souvent, on peut y voir une folle agitation en vue de contrôler le fou étourdi, médusé, et peut-être amusé d’assister à cette mise en scène sociale, telle une danse autour de lui, en habits d’époque et en costumes du pays.
