El trabajo analiza los rasgos fundamentales del desarrollo de la masonería en Asturias, desde la guerra de la independencia hasta el final de la guerra civil. Va precedido de una serie de consideraciones sobre el origen de la institución masónica e incluye el estudio básico del marco legislativo español en el que se enmarca su devenir histórico. Se destacan, como rasgos específicos, el carácter tardío de los orígenes de la masonería en Asturias, su implantación relativamente fuerte en la etapa de la Restauración y su protagonismo en la lucha por el establecimiento de una sociedad laica y democrática. En el primer tercio del siglo, continuando el desarrollo de la institución, llama la atención la participación en logias masónicas de destacadas figuras políticas (M. Álvarez, Quintanilla, Teodomiro Menéndez), el importante protagonismo de masones en la República y su apoyo al bando leal en la guerra civil, acabada la cual se iniciaba una feroz persecución contra toda corriente democrática, incluida la masonería.
