La fibrillation atriale est la dysrythmie à l'origine d'intolérance à l'effort la plus fréquente chez le cheval. La grande taille des atria et le fort tonus vagal observés dans cette espèce sont des facteurs prédisposants. Chez le cheval, contrairement aux autres espèces, la fibrillation atriale est le plus souvent idiopathique. Après quelques rappels sur la physiopathologie de la fibrillation atriale, l'auteur présente les résultats d'une étude rétrospective réalisée sur 33 cas présentés à la faculté de médecine vétérinaire de Montréal (St Hyacinthe). La prédominance de jeunes standardbreds de course, ne présentant pas de maladie cardiaque primaire est mise en évidence. Le traitement utilisé dans cette étude est le sulfate de quinidine par voie orale. Les résultats sont très bons avec 88 % de conversion à un rythme sinusal après traitement. Le pronostic sportif est bon si l'animal ne présente pas de maladie cardiaque primaire bien que les récidives ne soient pas rares.
