Abstract
Comment définir les couches moyennes aujourd’hui et quel est leur rapport à la ville, tel était le thème d’un séminaire international organisé à Paris en 2009. Le texte de cet Inédit est la conférence donnée à l’invitation de Marie-Hélène Bacqué et Stéphanie Vermeersh du CNRS sur un bilan de la réflexion québécoise sur le sujet. Le texte comprend trois parties. La première retrace l’émergence historique des nouvelles classes moyennes au Québec, notamment dans le contexte de la Révolution tranquille, dans la littérature sociologique. La seconde plante le décor de leur évolution récente, dont la thèse de la « normalisation » du Québec. La troisième introduit une dimension culturelle, encore peu abordée dans la littérature internationale récente sur le destin des couches moyennes. Au total, on y montre la juxtaposition de couches moyennes ayant des ancrages historiques distincts mais ayant toutes parties liées au développement de la ville. Une bibliographie a été ajoutée au texte original.
