Abstract
À l’abandon depuis 1992, l’Empress, un ciné-palace néo-égyptien des années 20, conserve une place importante dans le cœur des résidents de Notre-Dame-de-Grâce, qui souhaiteraient le voir renaître. Ce projet d’agrandissement et de réhabilitation défend une approche de réanimation du patrimoine, qui protège et met en valeur le bâti tout en respectant le milieu de vie dans lequel il s’inscrit et les communautés qui l’habitent. La réanimation de l’Empress vise à renouer avec le caractère public et accessible de sa fonction initiale de cinéma de quartier, qui se voit réinterprétée et actualisée. La création de trois espaces de rassemblement polyvalents élargit les possibilités d’appropriation par les usagers. D’abord, la salle principale existante, qui transportait jadis les spectateurs aux abords du Nil avec ses décors somptueux, est remise en ordre mais conserve un traitement brut et honnête envers son état actuel. Puis, superposée à celle-ci, est érigée une nouvelle salle qui tranche avec l’existant par sa matérialité et son caractère contemporain. Cette surélévation renforce le statut de marqueur urbain du bâtiment, en plus d’offrir un regard privilégié sur le quartier. Enfin, un parking adjacent est transformé en place publique pour assurer une transition à l’échelle résidentielle immédiate. Un long escalier extérieur – clin d’œil au motif montréalais – mène du dernier étage jusqu’à cette salle extérieure où se mélangent spectateurs d’un soir et résidents du quartier.
