De nos jours, le cheminement des étudiants ne suit plus une trajectoire linéaire (Conseil supérieur de l’éducation [CSE], 1988 ; Coulon, 1997). L’étudiant s’efforce de plus en plus de concilier travail, vie personnelle et vie universitaire au point où il est quelquefois obligé d’arrêter ses études. Pour l’année universitaire 2010-2011, seulement un tiers des étudiants parmi ceux qui avaient commencé un programme de premier cycle universitaire ont obtenu leur diplôme (gouvernement du Québec, 2014). Le décrochage des études au niveau universitaire affecte la société, l’université, et l’individu lui-même (Berger et Parkin, 2009 ; Institute for higher education policy [IHEP], 1998 ; McMahon, 2009). Cependant, l’accroissement de l’hétérogénéité des caractéristiques étudiantes (CSE, 2013) est un phénomène qui rend de plus en plus difficile l’identification des facteurs qui entravent la persévérance. Dans un contexte de rationalisation financière où préserver les sources de revenus est important, il devient crucial de cerner ces facteurs. Alors, la question qui subsiste est : quels sont les principaux facteurs qui influencent la persévérance dans un programme de premier cycle universitaire ? Ainsi, cette étude détermine les facteurs qui influencent la persévérance au premier cycle universitaire. De manière spécifique, il s’est agi de définir le profil type d’un étudiant persévérant, puis de déterminer les facteurs clés de cette persévérance au sein des étudiants du premier cycle. À cet effet, nous avons utilisé un échantillon de 718 étudiants inscrits pour la première fois à l’Université de Sherbrooke en automne 2008. Cet échantillon a été constitué grâce à deux sources de données provenant d’un questionnaire adressé aux étudiants par courriel et des données du bureau de la registraire de l’Université de Sherbrooke. La classification hiérarchique ascendante (CHA) et un modèle probit bivarié ont été utilisés pour analyser ces données. Les résultats montrent l’importance des variables institutionnelles parmi les facteurs qui influencent la persévérance dans un programme de premier cycle universitaire.
