The need to inspect ageing pipes in a deteriorating water supply system is recognized by most water utilities. The response to this need has resulted in several developments to inspect specific pipe sizes and pipe materials. Some of these developments have led to commercial products while others are still at an experimental stage. From the pipelines owner's perspective, two immediate questions arise: (1) which pipesto inspect and when and (2) what are the appropriate techniques or technologies available for inspecting pipes? The first question is discussed in terms of failure management for small diameter mains and failure prevention for large diameter mains. The available inspection technologies are discussed in terms of the basic principles (physics) and the advantages and limitations of each technology with respect to theirapplication to field inspections.
