Abstract
The Great Lakes passenger liner "North American", built by the Great Lakes Engineering Works of Ecorse, Michigan in 1913, was the first ship built for carrying passengers only. Amenities included medical services, church services, dance orchestra and other entertainment. Up to 500 passengers could enjoy seven-day cruises that visited ports at Chicago, Mackinac Island, Midland, (Ontario), Detroit, Buffalo and Cleveland. She sailed the Great Lakes for 51 years. In 1967 the Seafarers International Union bought the ship to use for training. As she was being towed to a shipyard for refitting, she was caught in the swells of Hurricane Doria and sank September 13, 1967. No one was injured. The ship, which lay in 200 feet of water off Nantucket Island, was located by dive teams in July, 2006.
