Abstract
Chaplin és un soldat ras en un campament d'instrucció durant la I Guerra Mundial. Cansat, s'adorm i té un somni en que s'ofereix per anar a les línies enemigues disfressat de tronc d'arbre. Arriba a una casa destruïda i troba a una jove francesa que encara hi viu. Ella l'amaga quan arriben els alemanys. Charlie aconsegueix escapar-se però ella es detinguda per haver ajudat a un soldat aliat. Seguidament, ell ensopega amb ella en el quarter general on està detinguda. Es col·loca l'uniforme d'oficial alemany i llavors entra el kaiser. Chaplin allibera a la noia i captura al kaiser i els altres dignataris, entregant-los als americans. Convertit en un heroi, es desperta i els soldats li diuen que continui amb la instrucció.
