Entre os nutrientes minerais essenciais às plantas, o nitrogênio (N) é o mais caro, o que consome mais energia e, potencialmente, o mais poluente, sendo geralmente o mais limitante à produção vegetal. No entanto, no Brasil, o uso do nitrogênio é bem menor quando comparado a outros países, o que se deve, em parte, à utilização e busca por sistemas produtivos que se beneficiem da fixação biológica do nitrogênio atmosférico. Neste documento, são disponibilizadas informações básicas e atualizadas sobre esse importantíssimo processo biológico, seus benefícios e sua utilização na agricultura brasileira.
