Peligros marítimos de marineros del Norte de la Corona de Castilla a finales de la Edad Media

Abstract
Este estudio se centra en los peligros a los que tuvieron que enfrentarse los marineros del Norte de Castilla, en especial, de San Vicente de la Barquera, Santander, Laredo y Castro Urdiales, cuatro villas portuarias que durante la Baja Edad Media fueron conocidas como “Las Cuatro Villas de la Costa de la Mar de Castilla Vieja”. Sin embargo, el trabajo también se hace extensivo a otras partes del golfo de Vizcaya. El marco geográfico utilizado en este artículo se centra en el Atlántico, aunque también hemos prestado atención al Mediterráneo occidental. Hemos recurrido tanto a documentación publicada como inédita, y la naturaleza de las fuentes es variada: compilaciones legislativas, literatura de la época, documentos judiciales (pleitos), imágenes, etc. Nuestro estudio concluye que las condiciones de trabajo de los marineros y comerciantes fueron muy duras, tanto que frecuentemente lo pagaban con sus vidas. Pese al alto coste, las actividades comerciales y pesqueras siguieron practicándose puesto que fueron vitales para el sostenimiento de aquellas villas.
