Abstract
Le fichier de population BALSAC est une banque de données informatisées qui permet la construction automatique des histoires familiales et des généalogies ascendantes ou descendantes. Les données qui nourrissent le fichier sont tirées principalement des actes de l’état civil (naissances, mariages, sépultures). L’objectif est de recouvrir l’ensemble de la population du Québec, depuis le début du peuplement au 17e siècle jusqu’à la période actuelle. Les travaux de construction du fichier ont commencé en 1972. Ils sont complétés pour les régions du Saguenay et de Charlevoix; ils sont en cours sur les autres régions du Québec. Le fichier BALSAC est utilisé principalement dans le champ de la génétique humaine (génétique des populations, épidémiologie génétique). Il appuie également divers travaux relevant des sciences sociales et historiques.
