Entre 1868 et 1870, un peu plus de cinq cents Canadiens français se portèrent volontaires dans le régiment des zouaves pontificaux. Néanmoins, le 20 septembre 1870, Rome, capitale des États de l’Église, tombait aux mains de l’armée du jeune royaume d’Italie. Le lendemain, l’armée pontificale était licenciée et le retour des volontaires internationaux dans leurs pays d’origine était organisé. Malgré son inutilité réelle sur le plan militaire, l’expédition des zouaves canadiens acquit une dimension épique, mythique, dans l’imaginaire collectif, dont le souvenir se perpétua au sein d’un mouvement associatif fondé par quelques vétérans, lequel demeura actif jusqu’à la fin du XXe siècle. Ce mémoire de maîtrise s’intéresse à l’évolution du mythe et du mouvement zouaves de 1868 à 1941. Pour ce faire, il s’appuie en bonne partie sur le modèle développé par Gérard Bouchard selon lequel le mythe, en tant que forme de représentation collective productrice de sens, s’insère fondamentalement dans les pratiques et les rapports sociaux. Le mythe zouave, en effet, a été indissociable du mouvement qui l’a porté et au sein duquel il s’est développé. Inversement, il a donné à ce dernier ses objectifs, son identité, bref il lui a donné un contenu. À cet égard, la figure du zouave idéal – c’est-à-dire celle portée par le récit mythique – s’articulait toujours autour de cinq caractères axiomatiques, à savoir : la religiosité, le nationalisme, la masculinité, la jeunesse et le militarisme. C’est à partir des mêmes caractères que le mouvement associatif s’est construit et défini : une association paramilitaire composée d’hommes plus ou moins jeunes, vouée au service de l’Église et de la nation. Ainsi se profile la relation dialectique entre le mythe et la praxis, où l’un tend vers l’autre et inversement, apportant son lot d’influences réciproques et de contradictions.
