Setting priorities for the replacement or repair of water mains requires not only considering their structural integrity and hydraulic performance, but also assessing their contribution to the deterioration of water quality. To date, little consideration has been given to the impacts of "aging" (or deterioration) of pipes on water quality. For this reason, the National Research Council of Canada's Institute for Research in Construction and the American Water Works Association Research Foundation have been collaborating on a four-year research project. The main objectives are, firstly, to identify deterioration mechanisms that may cause water quality failures in water distribution networks. Secondly, to develop a conceptual model for integrating the effects of various factors to quantify the risk of water quality failure as a function of "aging" water mains.
