The coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic has had a disproportionate impact on people who are homeless. The baseline prevalence of COVID-19 in people who are homeless globally is estimated at 2.1 per cent (in comparison to 1.9 per cent in the United Kingdom (UK), at the height of the pandemic in January 2021. In some homeless shelters in the United States (US), up to 67.0 per cent of residents are infected with COVID-19, and in these settings COVID-19 spreads actively between residents and workers. Research from Canada shows that, in comparison to the general population, people who are homeless are more than 20 times more likely to be hospitalised, more than 10 times more likely to require intensive care, and more than five times more likely to die with or because of COVID-19.
