« Historien national », « premier historien scientifique en Canada », « père de la littérature canadienne-française » : ce sont tous là des titres encore utilisés aujourd’hui afin de désigner François-Xavier Garneau. Or, ces appellations, qui remontent parfois à loin et qui laissent présager que l’idée qui circule de l’historien et son œuvre, l’Histoire du Canada depuis sa découverte jusqu’à nos jours (1845) est depuis longtemps figée, ont pourtant dû se construire sur un discours contradictoire. En effet, avant l’adoption de ces titres, Garneau et son œuvre ont dû faire face à une certaine contestation. Certaines ambiguïtés tendant à contredire la charge symbolique de ses titres ont également surgi une fois ces derniers passés dans l’usage courant. En conséquence, il est possible d’imaginer que ces différentes figures constituent en fait des mythèmes qui, tels que définis par Gérard Bouchard, « institue[nt] d’une manière durable une valeur, un sens, un trait identitaire, une vérité quelconque » (2004, 9) et réussissent à se constituer et à persister en « se soustrayant en grande partie à la contestation ou en survivant aux contradictions » (2014, 95). Afin de démontrer que nos différentes figures de l’historien sont bien des mythèmes, nous nous sommes donc appuyé sur le discours émis sur l’homme et son œuvre entre 1845 et 1990 afin de déterminer d’une part de quelle façon le discours a réussi à imposer la charge symbolique de ces figures malgré les contradictions préalables, et d’autre part comment il a su s’adapter aux contradictions et aux contextes littéraires, historiographiques et sociohistoriques changeants afin de maintenir l’essence de leur charge symbolique.
