Abstract
A considerable geographic and cultural distance separates Swedish Sloyd and Cowichan sweater making in Salish communities in southern areas of British Columbia. In 2014, a group of students from Vancouver stayed with students on Penelakut Island on Vancouver Island while learning about the history and present day creation of the iconic Cowichan sweater. The National Art Education Association (NAEA) guidelines in the United States promote the creation of meaningful arts integration. These guidelines serve as a framework for discussing the ways art teacher Gina Wane organized an inspiring study for her class. Her ideas are extended to discuss art programs at the secondary school level.
