Abstract

ABSTRACT: Solid-state optical cooling, which utilizes the anti-Stokes fluorescence phenomenon, has significant implications for diverse applications such as cryocooler systems, sensors, satellite devices, radiation balanced lasers, and more. Its unique features, including minimal mechanical vibrations, absence of mechanical components, and enhanced reliability, make it an attractive option for these applications. As foreseen by the optical cryocoolers industry, almost 70 % of early adopters have shown their interest in low phonon energy single crystals. Nevertheless, the substantial expenses and constrained design possibilities associated with those materials have generated a need for more adaptable alternatives to enhance the scope of applications. In this context, rare earth (RE) doped silica glasses and glass ceramics (GCs) stand out due to their remarkable attributes, including exceptional stability, robust mechanical and chemical resilience, resistance to high temperatures, moldability, and exceptional purity. Despite its potential benefits, solid-state laser cooling faces a significant challenge due to the high phonon energy of silica and the tendency of RE ions to aggregate at high doping concentrations in oxide glasses. This poses a challenge in achieving maximum cooling efficiency and necessitates better material purification and an increase in the RE ion concentration. Therefore, the subject of the thesis is focused on ‘Solid-state laser cooling in ytterbium doped oxide glass’. To counter the aforementioned limitations, the first two publications focused on the creation of a low phonon environment for RE elements within high phonon energy oxide glasses with different host compositions, by using different fluoride nanocrystals. The fluoride nanocrystalline environment offers rare earth ions a low phonon energy environment, superior to that of the oxide vitreous host. Additionally, glass ceramics can be manufactured from glassy materials, making them durable, easily mouldable and inexpensive, thus presenting a viable option for the practical realisation of solid-state laser coolers. The first publication of the thesis shows how the optical properties of GCs, specifically ytterbium (Yb) doped germanate and aluminosilicate oxyfluoride, can be assessed for their suitability in optical refrigeration applications. These materials were synthesized using the conventional melt quenching technique, with RE ion concentrations ranging from 0.5 to 3.0 mol %. The study reveals that the amount of Yb3+ ions significantly impact photoluminescence emission, quantum yield, and consequently, the cooling and heating behaviour of these materials.

Not calibrated prevalence, not ground truth. Human validation pending. The Gemma side is a direct model label for every work in the frame, read from the title-only record. The Codex side is a classifier learned from the 10,348 direct Codex labels and calibrated to design-weighted sample rates; fields without enough sample support carry no Codex call. Candidate is the union of the two sides; consensus is their intersection. These outputs are machine_predicted_unvalidated and are not human labels.

Machine scores (provisional)

The two teacher heads of the student model, read on this work. A score orders the frame for review; it never asserts a category, and the validation status ships verbatim with every row.

Baseline scores from an immature model (maturity gate not passed, 7 training rounds). Scores rank; they never assert a category.
