Abstract
The essay expands on some ideas presented in the author’s Final Paper for Completion of his Undergraduate Studies, entitled Mundo-sample: a transição neoliberal do Brasil na forma do rap nacional. Three rap songs by the rap group Racionais MC’s are analyzed with the intention of examining the way they use some references: “Capítulo 4, versículo 3”, “Negro Drama” and “A Praça”. For the essay I rely on scholars who study hip-hop music, such as Sewell, and with scholars who study neoliberalism, such as Dardot, Laval and Antunes. What may be noticed is both a tendency to a gradual decrease in intricate poetic images and to an ever-growing dialogue with the cinematic experience. One type of image replaces another. Such data are then read as a response from the artists to the deepening of neoliberalism in Brazil.
